Project: Structural Repairs to the White House Estate Pier.
Location: The Isle of Mull, Scotland.
Products: NATCEM® 35.
Client: The White House Estate.
Project Background
The pier at The White House Estate on the Isle of Mull had not been maintained for some time, and as a result, it was showing visible signs of deterioration. Furthermore, exposure to the harsh elements had led to the dislodgement and erosion of the original mortar. Consequently, this allowed hydraulic action from the sea to accelerate the degradation of the structure, further compromising its stability. To address this issue and extend the pier’s lifespan, essential repair works were, therefore, carried out. This proactive approach from the White House Estate aimed to prevent any further damage and ensure the pier remained safe and functional.
The repair process began with removing the old, as well as unstable, mortar. Subsequently, the White House Estate repointed the pier using NATCEM® 35. They specifically chose this product for its excellent viscosity, rapid strength gain, and ability to apply in wet conditions. As a result, it was perfect for tidal environments, where constant moisture accelerates deterioration.
Given the tidal nature of the site, the team carefully scheduled the work to avoid any delays. This strategy, therefore, ensured efficient application during specific time windows. Thanks to NATCEM® 35’s fast-setting time, the White House Estate were able to complete the repointing between tide cycles. Consequently, this minimised washout risk and ensured a durable bond. Furthermore, the material’s high performance in marine environments provided a long-lasting, robust repair solution, ultimately extending the pier’s service life.
The completed repairs have significantly increased the life expectancy of the pier by reinforcing its structural integrity and providing a robust barrier against further hydraulic erosion. Thanks to the rapid curing and durability of NATCEM® 35, the project was completed efficiently, ensuring the pier remains a functional and secure asset for years to come.
