Natural Cement’s NATCEM AC was used recently on large-scale service reservoir refurbishment project by specialist water industry contractor, Stonbury (on behalf of ESD).
The scheme, located in South West Scotland, included the installation of a new external roof membrane, overburden removal & reinstatement and outbuilding refurbishment.
The scope of the programme included re-waterproofing the reservoir roof and internal joints to re-create a fully watertight structure.
To re-waterproof the reservoir, the Stonbury team removed the existing soil overburden and excavated the tank perimeter to access the roof wall head joint. New perimeter drainage was installed and the roof slab was prepared with high pressure water jetting prior to the application of a DWI Reg.31 Approved NATCEM AC screed. Overbanding was applied to the wall head joint & all external roof joints and a new membrane was then applied.
When works to the roof were complete, a new 20mm washed and rounded gravel overburden was reinstated and perimeter kerbing added. Internal works included leak sealing and overbanding of all joints showing signs of ingress and concrete repairs to walls, columns, and beams.
The location of the reservoir, which is situated 400 metres above sea level, posed unique challenges in weather and temperature variation. The team reported four seasons experienced in one day. By using NATCEM AC when applying the screed to the roof, productivity could continue in temperatures as low as 1°C.
The product can be used down to 0℃ as standard and has been installed in temperatures as low as -14℃, meaning progress was not delayed on the project. The initial set of NATCEM AC can be sped up by mixing with warm water in winter and alternatively in the summer months it can be slowed by mixing with cold water. It is DWI Reg.31 Approved for potable water with only a 30 minute curing period required after set enabling a rapid return to service.
The project received highly positive feedback from the client’s team (ESD) throughout the programme.
