    Dumfries Structural Repairs – NATCEM® 35, NATCEM® AC, CWG Grout, NATCEM® Retarder

Project: Structural Repairs at Dumfries Bridge

    Location: Dumfries, Scotland

Products: NATCEM® 35, NATCEM® AC, CWG Grout, as well as NATCEM® Retarder

    Contractor: Chalmers Construction

    Client: Dumfries Council

    Project Background

Chalmers Construction undertook extensive structural repairs to a historical bridge in Dumfries. The bridge, which had suffered significant erosion as well as internal voids, and instability over time, required a robust repair strategy to restore its integrity and also its longevity.

A structural survey revealed extensive joint erosion. Furthermore, voids within the wall and compromised stability of the bridge were found. In response, the contractor was tasked with repointing the wall as well as stabilising internal voids, and constructing a new retaining structure to protect and reinforce the original wall also.

    Methodology of Structural Repairs

The repair solution specified Natural Cement’s NATCEM® 35, NATCEM® AC, NATCEM® Retarder, as well as CWG Grout for their high-performance characteristics, ensuring compatibility with the existing masonry and long-term durability.

    Scope of Work

The repair as well as the stabilisation works were carried out in the following stages:

    1. Repointing Joints:
The existing joints were repointed using NATCEM® 35, a rapid-setting mortar known for its superior durability as well as its bond strength.
    2. Void Filling:
Internal voids within the wall were filled with NATCEM® AC, chosen for its ability to flow easily into tight spaces and furthermore, providing excellent structural stability.
    3. Set Control:
Retarder was added to both mortars to extend working times, moreover enabling precise application and reducing material waste.
    4. Retaining Structure:
A new masonry wall was constructed around the original. The void between the two walls was filled with CWG Grout, furthermore providing an additional layer of reinforcement and stability.

    Why NATCEM® Products?

Natural Cement’s range of products was chosen for their ability to address the project’s specific challenges:

    • NATCEM® 35 and NATCEM® AC delivered rapid set times, and long-term durability. However, these rapid set times weren’t always ideal and so:
    • Retarder ensured extended working times, critical for large-scale application.
    • CWG Grout provided the necessary strength and flowability for the void between the old and new walls.

    Outcome
Chalmers Construction successfully completed the project, ensuring the historical wall was both restored as well as expertly protected. The use of Natural Cement’s innovative products resulted in:

    • Enhanced structural integrity through effective void filling as well as joint repair.
    • Improved durability, moreover protecting the wall against further degradation.
    • Efficient as well as precise application, furthermore meeting project deadlines.
