After two years of the BMF Master Merchant being cancelled due to Covid. On the weekend of 9th-10th July, the competition was finally able to go ahead!
Natural Cement was the headline sponsor for the Mastermerchant held in Ambleside, The Lake District. We also participated in the exciting team-building challenge involving a series of mental and physical problem-solving exercises such as code breaking, map reading, climbing, ghyll scrambling, and paddle boarding.
The event kicked off on Friday evening with a team briefing, we then got involved in an ice breaker activity which helped the teams get to know each other before the main activities began.
On Saturday morning, our first activity of the day was paddleboarding. We got kitted out with wetsuits, helmets and picked a suitable-sized oar! While out on the water we had to overcome some challenges in our team to score points. Laura said, “Paddleboarding was my favourite activity of the weekend! I was scared at first but once I got into it, it was good fun, and we had a brilliant time out on the water with the challenges”.
Once we had completed the paddleboarding activity, we had to complete a series of problem-solving tasks, these proved a little more difficult than paddleboarding! After lunch, we travelled across some beautiful country roads to a National Trust Park called Sticklebarn and the Langdales.
A quote from Sophie, “Ghyll scrambling was very overwhelming to start with, but we worked as a team and eventually got the hang of it. It was an amazing experience and being in the beautiful Lake District made it that much more enjoyable as we reached the top of the waterfall”.
That concluded the activities for the day, and we headed back to the YHA for dinner with the rest of the teams for a catch-up and to celebrate the successes of the day. On Sunday morning, we boarded the ferry across the lake to Wray Castle where we had to complete a series of team-building activities, including orienteering, codebreaking and putting up a tent blindfolded. Finally, we headed back on the ferry and ended the competition with an awards ceremony to announce the winners of the weekend! Unfortunately, we came in 12th place but it’s the taking part that counts, right?
