Halt Concrete Degradation with NATCEM®
Within wastewater environments, hydrogen sulphide (H₂S) gas reacts with oxygen and bacteria to form sulphuric acid. This acid attacks the calcium compounds in Portland cement, creating a weakened, porous structure. Over time, this leads to spalling, cracking, and significant loss of cross-section. Combined with freeze–thaw cycles, abrasion, and chemical infiltration, many Portland-based systems struggle to maintain durability.
NATCEM® products are designed to halt concrete degradation from the inside out. Manufactured from a unique natural cement binder, they offer a dense, low-porosity matrix that resists sulphate and acid attack. Because the binder itself contains no added lime, it avoids the chemical reactions that commonly drive degradation in Portland-based concretes.
Additionally, NATCEM® materials set rapidly – even in wet or cold environments (some down to and below zero degrees celsius) – and gain strength within hours. This allows for quick reinstatement of structures such as wet wells, manholes, and chambers without prolonged downtime. Importantly, their low shrinkage and excellent adhesion ensure long-term bond performance, even under constant flow or hydrostatic pressure.
Across the wastewater sector, NATCEM® mortars, grouts, and shotcretes have been used to rehabilitate deteriorated assets and prevent further loss as found in examples such as this case study centred on Margate Wastewater Treatment Works. Their natural resistance to sulphates, chlorides, and biogenic acid attack makes them a dependable choice for both repair and protection. From treatment plants to outfalls, operators are using NATCEM® to extend the lifespan of vital infrastructure.
Because NATCEM® products are manufactured from naturally occurring materials and require minimal processing, they also deliver a lower embodied carbon footprint. This sustainable advantage means asset owners can address deterioration while supporting environmental targets without compromising performance or durability.
To halt concrete degradation, materials must perform under pressure. NATCEM® combines rapid strength development, sulphate resistance, and proven reliability in water industry applications. Whether for full structural rehabilitation or preventive maintenance, NATCEM® helps engineers refurbish infrastructure with materials that are built to perform, and backed by nature.
