Transport for London (TFL) awarded a concrete repair package to Concrete Repairs Ltd (CRL) which involved the full inspection and repair of the Woolwich ferry jetty. The Woolwich Ferry is an important free service that links Woolwich with North Woolwich and has been in operation since 1965.
The refurbishment package involved carrying out repairs to over 100 concrete piles. The removal of the 50yr old worn concrete was completed by way of the hydro-demolition method and the new concrete was reinstated using Natural Cement’s Shotcrete 530 dry spray concrete.
Due to the fast moving 7m tidal fluctuations in that part of the River Thames, a fast setting and curing material was needed. CRL chose Natural Cement’s Shotcrete 530 as it begins the setting process after just 4 minutes therefore successfully preventing any washout from the tides.
Gunite Solutions Ltd from Essex was tasked with the spray concrete application and were “amazed” at which the speed of set occurred.
As with all Natural Cement materials it contains no added chemicals and is environmentally friendly therefore has no affect on any marine life. It is also salt water and chemical resistant and is often used for waterproofing and tunnel linings.
